Vineyard Notes
Polygon No. 5 consists of two very similar nearby parcels making up 0.37 hectares in size. Working with terroir specialist, Pedro Parra, we identified this polygon to be uniquely significant because of its heavily fractured schist composition. There are deeper soils sitting above a thick band of micaceous schist that contains veins of iron-rich clay within the fractures. NASAA certified organic and biodynamic. 1893kg of fruit was handpicked on the 15th of March from Polygon No. 5. 30% of the fruit was destemmed and the remaining 70% whole bunches were hand bucketed into a concrete tulip. With a cool ferment and gentle extraction, it was pressed after nearly a month on skins before malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured in concrete egg for 12 months and bottled in August 2023.

Grenache from the fractured schist and clays of Polygon No. 5 on Alkina's Greenock estate; 70% whole bunches and raised in unlined concrete tulip and egg. Perhaps a little more in the way of bass tones off Polygon No. 5. The fruit a slightyly darker shade of red, a sense of compression to the tannin profile, again toothsome and chalky, yet demanding more attention. Spice, dried meats and dried flowering herbs, too, with a long finish with just the right amount of sinew.

Deep red-purple but not too dark. Dusty terracotta earthy nose, black cherry beneath. Rich, dense, concentrated palate, Hefty, big-boned, powerful, masses of tannins but very good tannins. The most structured wine.

2022 was a compressed vintage in the Barossa, delivering freshness over amplitude. Not a bad thing when it comes to the resolute urgency of now, such an important thing at times. Riffs on tamarind, dried rose, lime blossom and exotic citrus notes, all muddled with clove, ginger and bibs and bobs of the souk. A little less heft and grandeur of recent years, but no less fidelitous to place, type and philosophy. Plenty of marrow to suck on: real people, a great terroir and organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This punchy 2022 Grenache offers up robust aromas of cherry pit and ham bone with an almost floral lift. Dense and drying tannins make this a firm and meaty proposition with distinctive minerality and tightly bound flavors that are not yet ready to be enjoyed. The 2022 has good potential and may turn into something special.

Medium-deep red-purple colour; fresh and bright also on the nose, with cherries and a note of bubblegum, a faint reductive overtone that is barely perceptible; the palate has very good intensity and abundant powdery tannins, the finish long and drying. Density, concentration and power aplenty. This would richly reward more time in the cellar. If drinking young, serve it with hearty protein.
